You Will Need:
1 or more pounds of uncooked rice, large plastic bowl or container, wooden spoons, measuring spoons, plastic cups
Directions:
Put rice in the container, along with the cups and spoons. Place the container on the kitchen floor for your child to practice spooning, pouring, and scooping. Encourage your child to think about what he is doing by saying things like, “How many scoops does it take to fill up the cup?”;“What does the rice feel like?”; “How is it different from the rice we eat?”
Tip:
Place the container on a tray or piece of cloth -- rice will likely spill on the floor. Since rice is slippery, keep a broom handy to sweep the floor often and explain to your child how important it is to keep the rice in the kitchen. This activity will give your child the opportunity to be with you while you are working in the kitchen -- he can even pretend to cook dinner!
