You Will Need:
Purchased or homemade puppets
Directions:
Talk and play with your child while using the puppets. Make up skits and ask open-ended questions like, "Why do you think that happened?”; “How do you think she's feeling?”; “Why do you think she's sad?" Consider having a special puppet that you bring out at particular times like clean-up time or bedtime to assist with the routine. Say things like, "Look, Fluffy is helping clean up. Can you help Fluffy?"
Tip:
Puppets may be able to help a child begin to talk about feelings such as shyness, anger, joy, fear, etc. For example, you could have the puppet say something like, "Sometimes when I am sad, I feel like talking to someone. Do you want to talk to me?" However, don't use the puppet as a substitute for real interaction with your child, just as an opener to get conversation started.
